Chyk Walk - Shiva Yaathirai

Image
A group of youngsters walked to Lord Shiva temple at Tiruvaalangaadu in Tiruvallur district. The yatra started at Veera-raagavar temple and it was a 17 km walk. Tiruvaalangaadu is named so because it used to be a forest of banyan trees. Therefore the name Tiru + aalam + kaadu. The Lord is worshiped in the name vata-aranya-ishwarar. This is the place where Lord Shiva and Devi had a dance fight and the Lord stunned Her when he took the fallen stud from the ears by His one foot and put it back onto His ears. Temple is more than 2000 years old. It is believed that kaaraikaal ammaiyaar eternally worships the Lord there.

Bhagavad Gita yajna - 12th chapter day 2 notes

Verse 12.1 अर्जुन उवाच | एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते | ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमा: || 1 || arjuna uvāca eva ṁ satata-yukt ā ye bhakt ā s tv ā ṁ paryup ā sate ye ch ā py ak ṣ haram avyakta ṁ te ṣ h ā ṁ ke yoga-vittam ā ḥ Arjuna’s question Amongst the devotees, who is greater? The seeker who worships the Lord with the form or the one who worships the Lord as nameless & formless? Nirguna upAsakAs or saguna upAsakAs? This question of Arjuna makes us think whether the Lord is with form or without form. To understand this, let us start from ourselves. Are we with form or without form? When asked thus, we say that we are both. i.e. we exist as form when seen at the gross level, but also, we exist without form as in the state of sleep or deep thinking. Hinduism embraces both ways of worship. i.e. worshipping the supreme reality in form and also without any form and attributes. His Holiness Swami Tapovan Maharaj

Image
Pujya Swami Tapovan Maharaj was the very embodiment of the ideals of sannyasa, endowed with supreme renunciation, deep wisdom, saintliness, austerity, and compassion, a true virakta mahatma. Swamiji was born in 1886, in the village of Mudappalur in Palghat district to Balamba and Achutan Nair. His parents named him Subramanyan, but they lovingly called him Chippu Kutty. After the untimely death of his father, Swamiji left his home at the age of 28 to heed the call of the divine, eventually taking up residence in a one-room thatched hut in Uttarkashi, which came to be known as Tapovan Kutir. It was here that Gurudev sat at the feet of the great master for a total of seven years absorbing Vedantic knowledge. Swamiji attained mahasamadhi on the 16th of January 1957 on the full moon day; in the Brahma-muhurta at 4:30 a.m. "He came from nowhere, existed everywhere, and ultimately went to be everywhere."

His Holiness Swami Chinmayananda

Image
Swami Chinmayananda was born on May 8, 1916 as Balakrishna Menon in Ernakulam, Kerala. Chattambi Swamigal a saint known for his yogic powers predicted a great spiritual future for the boy. A major turning point of his life was his meeting with Swami Sivananda. On February 25th, 1949, along with five other students, Balakrishna was initiated into sannyasa. Swami Sivananda gave him the name "Chinmayananda Saraswati," Chinmayananda meaning "filled with the bliss of pure Consciousness. Swami Sivananda then sent him to Uttarkashi to study under Swami Tapovan Maharaj. Seven years later, brimming with Vedantic knowledge, with a heart overflowing with love for his countrymen, Swami Chinmayananda was ready to execute what he called the "Gangotri Plan" to spread the message of Vedanta to the masses. By the time he attained mahasamadhi in August 1993, Gurudev as he is known affectionately by his followers, had conducted 576 jnana yajnas and scores of family oriented spiri

His Holiness Swami Tejomayananda

Image
After the Mahasamadhi of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda assumed the post of the spiritual head of the global mission and worked tirelessly for 23 years in fulfilling the vision that Pujya Gurudev started. As he says, I am not in Swamiji’s shoes, I am at his feet . Pujya Guruji has served as Acharya of the Sandeepany Institutes of Vedanta both in India and California, USA.. He has written commentaries on scriptural texts, translated Pujya Gurudev’s commentaries into Hindi, and authored a number of books. A key contribution is “Hindu Culture: An Introduction”, a text acclaimed for its clear description of the basics of Hinduism and adopted as a text in some American high schools. Pujya Guruji excels in expounding a wide spectrum of Hindu scriptures, from Ramayana to the Bhagavad Gita to the Upanishads. He conducts jnana yajnas on Vedanta as he moves around the world. His Holiness Swami Swaroopananda

Image
In an era rife with scepticism and confusion about matters spiritual, Swami Swaroopananda is a rare voice that blends authenticity with accessibility; theory with self- practice; logic with heart. Formerly the Regional Head of Chinmaya Mission Australia, United Kingdom, Middle East, Africa and Far East, and presently Chairman of the Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth Trust (University for Sanskrit and Indic Traditions) and Director of the Chinmaya International Residential School in Coimbatore, South India, Swami Swaroopananda has now been bestowed by Swami Tejomayananda the privilege to also serve as the Head of Chinmaya Mission Worldwide. Born and brought up in the bustling commercial capital of India, Swamiji had always been convinced that beyond life's superficial, everyday joys and sorrows, there was something more enduring and satisfying. As a child he heard from his grandmother many religious stories based on the great Indian epics and the history of saints. These stories suddenly ca

Interview with Gurudev - Pritish Nandy

Image
Missionary For Hinduism Swami Chinmayananda speaks to Pritish Nandy - in 1980 He wears a strange shade of Ochre, which looks almost like pink. There are silver knobs on his wooden sandals, which add at least three inches to his five-feet five. His long tresses cascade on to his shoulders framing with black and gray an intensely intelligent face. Swami Chinmayananda, 65, is Hinduism's answer to the countless young men and women who have strayed away over the years, disgusted with the meaningless rituals and the tired theology of the world's oldest living faith. (Please note that this interview and write up was done in 1980) A distinguished scholar, an ardent teacher and a compulsive globetrotter, the Swami is today held to be one of the few serious and credible missionaries that Hinduism has to offer. His missions are all over the world. So are his devotees and students. And they are growing at a rate which will soon, perhaps, make Swami Chinmayananda numero uno in the glitterin
